Relay for Life is a 12-hour overnight non-competitive relay taking place this May 25-26th from 7:00pm to 7:00am. This event was created by the Canadian Cancer Society as a celebration of survival, a tribute to the lives of loved ones and a night of fun, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer. Teams of 10 people consisting of students, teachers and staff participate in a night of excitement and inspiration by collecting pledges ahead of time with all the money going towards fighting cancer in our community. Cancer is a disease which touches all of us and AY wants to help the Canadian Cancer Society continue the fight by funding research, offering credible information on cancer, risk reduction and treatment and providing support programs for people living with cancer.
How do I register for Relay for Life?
Come down to the Pit at lunch on a Wednesday or Friday with your $15 registration fee. You must pay your fee before you receive a registration package.
The registration package includes:
·A field trip form
·A registration form
·One luminary
The field trip form, registration form and luminary should be returned completed/ decorated ASAP! Registrants (that’s you) will form teams of 10 people to participate in the event. These other 9 people can be fellow A.Y. students, and students from other high schools or A.Y. alumni, given that the team has a ratio of 7 current A.Y. students to 3 other school students or alumni. One A.Y. student will be designated “Team Captain”, and will be responsible for their team. Teams will then find pledges who wish to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society. Our goal is for each participant to raise $100, for a grand total of $10,000 raised!
Why overnight?
Relay is held overnight in order to simulate the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while undergoing treatment. The sun setting symbolizes the diagnoses and the state of mind of a cancer patient as they feel their life is coming to an end. Around 1:00 am or 2:00 am represents the start of treatment when patients become exhausted, not wanting to go on and possibly wanting to give up. Around 4:00 am to 5:00 am symbolizes the approaching end of treatment and though patients are tired, they know they will make it. The sun rising represents the end of treatment for a cancer patient and the understanding that life will go on. As participants leave relay, we hope leave the impression that though they are exhausted, there is hope for a new day! The money raised will help to find a cure, and though relay will end, there is no finish line until we find a cure.
Can't participate?
Ceremonies like the Survivor’s Victory Lap and the Luminary Lighting are in remembrance and celebration of people who have been touched by cancer. We are inviting anyone who is interested in attending these ceremonies to email

. Survivors are an important part of the event as they open the relay so please pass this on to anyone in our community who has been personally affected.
Luminaries can also be purchased at the event or at AYJ in honour and memory of loved ones for $5. We encourage anyone to decorate the bags with quotes, inspiration or personal experiences with cancer. You can also pledge teams at www.relayforlife.ca/ayj!
